Institutionalized caring

I feel like we are rationalizing, quantifying love and connection, caring for other beings, whether in institutionalized thinking or in the now romanticized sociopathic thinking.

We assess how many lives will be saved before acting, we think about how we can best create connection between inhabitants of a neighborhood we don’t even live in, … But is the survival of the species our main concern at the moment ? If not, then why do we count saved lives and create cold, distant systems to optimize that metric ?

Shouldn’t we be irrationally embracing these irrational values ?
